Drones, AI, and Smart Meetings at the Beginning of the Microsoft Build Conference

Microsoft kicked off its annual conference for developers, called Build, on Monday. “The world is becoming a computer,” Satya Nadella, the company’s CEO, said towards the beginning of his keynote address, describing the way that computing power is starting to be found everywhere, from cars to drones to homes. That pretty unsurprising idea, plus heavy doses of talk about artificial intelligence, AI and accessibility, mixed reality, chatbots, the cloud, and the “edge”—the computers and phones you actually interact with—defined the first hours of the event.

We got to see Alexa and Cortana hanging out

We live in a world of talking digital helpers, from Siri, to the Google Assistant, to Amazon Alexa, and Microsoft’s version, Cortana. While Amazon and Microsoft announced back in August of last year that the two companies would be collaborating to make their two virtual assistants work together, today we saw a version of that in action.
If you’re imagining Alexa and Cortana freely talking to each other like two robotic hosts in Westworld, you are out of luck. However, what they showed was still interesting.
Meghan Saunders, general manager for Cortana at Microsoft, and Tom Taylor, a senior vice president for Alexa at Amazon, joined each other on stage for a demonstration. Speaking into an Echo, Saunders added an item to her shopping list through Alexa, then asked Alexa to open Cortana. From there, Cortana spoke to Saunders through the Echo, read her schedule out loud, then helped her send an email to Taylor.
Taylor then started speaking with Cortana from a computer, then asked it to open Alexa. Alexa spoke to him through the computer, then called him an Uber to a restaurant called Harvest Vine.
The system, still in beta, feels a little bit silly—asking one virtual assistant to let you speak with another seems less efficient than just only speaking to one of them—but still, it’s nice to see the robots getting along and it’s conceivable that this be helpful for some people in specific situations.

Drones and AI

Microsoft is working with drone-making giant DJI, and showcased the intersection of artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial vehicles on stage. In a demonstration, a DJI Mavic Air drone flew around and live-streamed a video feed of industrial-looking pipes onstage that had a simulated problem with them; a laptop receiving the livestream used AI on it to inspect the video in real time and identify an anomaly, shown with a yellow box around it on screen.
It’s easy to see how this kind of feature would be helpful for industries with tons of equipment to inspect—a human flies a drone, and instead of people eyeballing everything, the AI looks for problems and highlights them. And since the AI analysis is happening right on the laptop (it can also run directly onboard a bigger, fancier drone call the DJI M200), the company’s data doesn’t have to go up to a cloud for analysis.

Smart meetings

At another moment, Microsoft’s Raanah Amjadi showed a concept of how a prototype device could help out during a meeting. They simulated a meeting about “smart buildings” right on stage that felt very futuristic and incredibly canned.
But the pyramid-like prototype device on the table, equipped with the ability to both listen and see the meeting, did cool stuff. For one thing, it was able to visually identify—and then greet outloud—the people who physically walked into the meeting, saying “Hello Dave,” when someone named Dave Brown entered.
On a screen in the meeting room, the system recognized who was talking and took down a transcript in real time of what everyone said. In a column next to the transcript, the AI also made a note of follow-up items that appeared to be automatically generated when someone said the phrase “follow up” in a sentence. The set-up can also give a remote worker a live translation into a different language.
So if you’re excited for a future where there’s automatically a record of every silly thing you say in a meeting and the follow-up items are instantly written down, Microsoft could someday make you happy.

Acid Reflux and GERD Overview

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents moves backward into the esophagus. It’s also called acid regurgitation or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). Acid reflux is a common digestive condition. According to the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), more than 60 million Americans experience acid reflux at least once a month. More than 15 million Americans experience it every day.

Acid reflux usually causes a burning sensation in the chest. The sensation radiates up from the stomach to the mid-chest or throat. This is also known as heartburn.
Acid reflux may also cause a sour taste in the back of the mouth. Chronic reflux can sometimes lead to difficulty swallowing and in some cases it can even cause breathing problems like asthma.

What Causes Acid Reflux?

The muscle at the end of the esophagus is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is a one-way valve that normally opens for limited amounts of time when you swallow. Acid reflux occurs when the LES doesn’t close properly or tightly enough. A faulty or weakened LES allows digestive juices and stomach contents to rise back up into the esophagus.
Large meals that cause the stomach to stretch a lot can temporarily loosen the LES. Other factors associated with reflux include:

• obesity
• stress
• hiatal hernia (when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm)
• consuming particular foods (particularly carbonated beverages, coffee, and chocolate)

If you notice that your reflux only occurs with certain foods, try eliminating them from your diet. Some people also find that sitting up straight during and after eating improves their symptoms.

Types of Acid Reflux

Most people experience occasional acid reflux or GER. However, in some cases the digestive condition is chronic. It’s considered gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) if it occurs more than twice a week.
Acid reflux can affect infants and children as well as adults. Children under 12 usually don’t experience heartburn. Instead they have alternative symptoms like:

• trouble swallowing
• dry cough
• asthma
• laryngitis (loss of voice)

These alternative symptoms can also appear in adults.

Infant Acid Reflux

Adults aren’t the only ones affected by acid reflux. According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC), more than half of all babies experience infant acid reflux during their first three months of life. It’s important for your pediatrician to differentiate between normal reflux and GERD.
Spitting up and even vomiting is normal and may not bother the baby. Other signs of normal reflux include:

• irritability
• discomfort
• arching the back during or immediately after feedings
• poor feeding
• coughing

These symptoms generally aren’t harmful to the baby.
GERD in children can easily be missed. Infant acid reflux usually goes away on its own around 12 to 18 months of age. If symptoms persist beyond 18 months of age or become severe, talk to your child’s pediatrician. Your child’s symptoms may be a sign of GERD. Serious symptoms include:

• a lack of weight gain
• refusing to eat
• breathing problems

Call your pediatrician immediately if your infant:

• vomits large amounts

• spits up green or brown fluid
• has trouble breathing after spitting up

To reduce reflux symptoms, your pediatrician may suggest:

• burping the baby a few times during a feeding
• giving more frequent, smaller meals
• keeping the baby upright for 30 minutes after eating
• adding up to 1 tablespoon of rice cereal to 2 ounces of infant milk (if using a bottle)
• changing your diet (if you are breast-feeding)
• changing the type of formula
• certain over-the-counter or prescription medicines to control symptoms

You also may be referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist. Sometimes further testing is necessary.

Reflux Esophagitis

Esophagitis is a general term for inflammation of the esophagus. It can be accompanied by irritation.
Reflux esophagitis is a type of esophagitis associated with GERD. It’s caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus. This damages the esophageal tissues. It often causes heartburn, which may become chronic.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

GERD is a chronic digestive disease. It affects people of all ages, including children. It’s the more serious form of GER and can eventually cause more serious health problems if left untreated. Acid reflux that occurs more than twice a week and causes inflammation of the esophagus is considered to be GERD.
Most people with GERD experience symptoms such as:

• heartburn
• regurgitation
• trouble swallowing
• a feeling of excessive fullness

Consult your doctor if you have symptoms, or use over-the-counter (OTC) antacids or reflux medications for more than two weeks.

Long-Term Outlook of Acid Reflux

Living with acid reflux is inconvenient. Fortunately, symptoms can generally be controlled through:

• stopping smoking
• reducing alcohol consumption
• eating less fat
• avoiding foods that set off attacks
• losing weight
• sleeping in different positions
• antacids
• anti-reflux medication
• surgery

Most people with reflux will not have long-term health problems. However, GERD can increase the risk of Barrett’s esophagus. This is a permanent change in the lining of the esophagus.
Barrett’s esophagus increases the risk of esophageal cancer. However this type cancer is very rare, even in people with Barrett’s esophagus. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), over a period of 10 years, only 10 out of 1,000 people with Barrett’s will develop cancer. Nevertheless, patients with chronic, unremitting GERD despite medical treatment are often referred for endoscopy. In this procedure, a specialist doctor will examine the lining of your esophagus using a specialized instrument (endoscope), looking for changes of Barrett’s esophagus or cancer in order to try and find the problems early enough to be able to offer you effective treatment.

1. Know your students' names and use their names as often as possible.
2. Plan for every class; never try to wing it.
3. Pay attention to the strengths and limitations of each of your students. Reward their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses.
4. If possible, set your room in a U-shape to encourage interaction among students.
5. Vary your instructional strategies; use lectures, demonstrations, discussions, case studies, groups, and more.
6. Review the learning objectives with your students. Be sure students know what they are expected to learn, do, know, etc.

As we know satellite communication uses satellite placed above earth for communication by VSATs placed on the earth. It is also used for TV broadcasting. Satellites uses microwave frequencies for communication with each other using inter-satellite links and with earth stations or VSATs. There are different types of satellite based on applications and their orbits.


The figure-1 depicts typical satellite satellite. As shown it consists of space segment, ground segment and TT&C (Tracking Telemetry & command station OR satellite control center).
The duplexing techniques such as FDD/TDD and multiple access techniques such as FDMA/TDMA/CDMA are used to separate signals. This will help in efficient usage of satellite transponder bandwidth. VSAT basics and satellite basics for more information.

Advantages of Satellite Communication

Following are the advantages of Satellite Communication:
➨It is used for mobile and wireless communication applications independent of location.
➨It covers wide area of the earth hence entire country or region can be covered with just one satellite.
➨It provides wider bandwidth based on SCPC or MCPC allocation types.
➨It co-exists with terrestrial microwave line of sight communication.
➨It is easy to install and manage the ground station sites.
➨It does not incur much of the costs per VSAT site.
➨It is used for voice, data, video and any other information transmission. Satellite system can be interfaced with internet infrastructure to obtain internet service. It is also used for GPS applications in various mobile devices for location determination.
➨It is easy to obtain service from one single provider and uniform service is available.
➨It has small fading margin on the order of about 3dB.
➨It is used in wide variety of applications which include weather forecasting, radio/TV signal broadcasting, gathering intelligence in military, navigation of ships and aircrafts, global mobile communication, connecting remote areas etc.
➨LEO and MEO satellite types have lower propagation delay and lower losses compare to GEO satellite. This will help them to be used for global coverage.

Disadvantages of Satellite Communication

Following are the disadvantages of Satellite Communication:
➨Satellite manufacturing requires more time. Moreover satellite design and development requires higher cost.
➨Satellite once launched, requires to be monitored and controlled on regular periods so that it remains in the orbit.
➨Satellite has life which is about 12-15 years. Due to this fact, another launch has to be planned before it becomes un-operational.
➨Redundant components are used in the network design. This incur more cost in the installation phase.
➨In the case of LEO/MEO, large number of satellites are needed to cover radius of earth. Moreover satellite visibility from earth is for very short duration which requires fast satellite to satellite handover. This makes system very complex.

 Bangabandhu Communication satellite is the first satellite of Bangladesh which will be launched using vehicle SpaceX & Falcon-9 from the Cape Canaveral launch pad on 16th December 2017 & it will start its commercial operation from March 2018.

This satellite will bring enormous development & uninterrupted telecommunication System in Bangladesh especially in television, telephone & Internet service which Bangladesh usually purchase from overseas.

At present Bangladesh is spending annually more than $14 million on satellite rent to ensure connectivity of television, radio, telephone and Internet. So this satellite will make Bangladesh self-contained & Bangladesh will also earn some foreign currency by broadcasting service.

India & Pakistan have their own satellites, Sri-Lanka is in queue. So Bangladesh rent service to Nepal, Myanmar or Bhutan & may earn more than $50 million per year.

Finally communication system of Bangladesh will get new progression of development. This satellite will give Bangladesh a long term service to a large scalability, global availability, reliability, versatility & super performance.

Some sectors like telemedicine, e-learning, e-researchs, video conference, defence & disaster management system will be improved for this satellite in Bangladesh.
